Attendance Allowance

If you’re over State Pension age and need regular help with your personal care, even if that help is from a family member, you can apply for Attendance Allowance.

Applying is simple but the form is complex. We take the time to sit with you to complete the form and simplify the process.

Qualifying for Attendance Allowance

You may qualify for Attendance Allowance if you:
  • Are over State Pension age.
  • Have a long-term physical or mental illness or disability. This can include sensory conditions such as sight and hearing loss, mental health issues and cognitive impairments such as dementia
  • Have needed help with personal care or regular supervision from someone else for at least six months. You can claim whether or not you actually receive this help or supervision. Personal care tasks could include things like washing and bathing, dressing and undressing, getting in or out of bed, and taking medication.

If you're terminally ill, you can claim Attendance Allowance straightaway.

Two rates of Attendance Allowance

  • Lower Rate £60 per week: If you need care or supervision during the day OR night.
  • Higher Rate £89.60 per week: If you need care or supervision during the day AND night, or if you are terminally ill.

Attendance Allowance is not means tested so anyone can claim regardless of your financial situation.

Filling in the Attendance Allowance Form

The Attendance Allowance Claim form asks 52 questions and is 30 pages long. Many qualifying people find it daunting so don’t claim their legitimate allowance.

Receiving the Allowance

New claimants should receive a written response from the Department of Work and Pensions within four weeks. The letter will tell you whether you’ve been awarded Attendance Allowance, and the rate that you’re eligible for.
